The Change-Up: “Tired, or going through a phase”

We watched The Change-Up last night. Not too bad a film. My favourite line though is as follows (or words to the affect of – I can’t seem to find it on net anywhere to be sure):

Your own children are little angels. The only time they do anything wrong they’re either tired, or going through a phase.

So very true. We say that about Stan all the time. Truth is, he’s probably just a little shit who needs a bit more discipline than we give him.

Now I Know: Learning something new every day

I can’t remember how I found it, but I recently signed up to a daily newsletter called Now I Know, and it’s turned out to be a good move.

Basically, every day this chap called Dan Lewis sends out an email containing an interesting article that teaches you something new.

So far I have learnt about an April Fool involving a volcano, America’s plans to invade Canada (as a means of defence against the UK), and a little-people themed theme park in China called The Kingdom of Little People.

You can get an idea of what’s covered by viewing the archives.

Dave Winer on The Rebublican’s Democracy

That said, the left pundits and pols let the right walk all over them. For example in the latest ridiculous shitstorm about contraception. The basic argument of the Catholic Church is that they shouldn’t have to pay for something that’s against their values. The Republicans see a chance to fight with Democrats, so they grab it. They say it’s a question of liberty. No one should have to pay for something they don’t believe in.

But they obviously don’t really believe this, even if the Catholic Church does.

A simple way to corner them would be to raise another issue that the Catholic Church has a moral objection to — the death penalty. Why should members of the Catholic Church be required to pay for killing people when it’s against their values? Why should any of us be forced to pay for it?

Well put.

Our Blades are F***ing Great!

I love this advert (above). It’s similar to how Tesco cut through all the bullshit of your average mobile phone advert by starting their advert off with some pretentious rubbish, and then cut it half way through and tell you some useful information instead. That advert can be seen below.

The DollarShaveClub advert takes on the shaving adverts in a similar way, and does it brilliantly.

BBC Three – Sun, Sex and Suspicious Parents

Tearaway teens went wild on their first ever holiday with their mates, unaware that their party-pooping parents went along too.

via BBC Three – Sun, Sex and Suspicious Parents, Series 2, After the Holiday.

Becky is currently watching this. It’s trash. This is what ITV should be making, not the Beeb. But that isn’t why I’m writing this.

I’m writing this because I think the entire concept of the show is flawed.

The idea is teens go on a 18-30s style holiday, unaware that their parents are following them. We then get to enjoy the shock of the teens when they find out that all those shameful things they got up to were WITNESSED BY THEIR PARENTS!!!! If only they knew the parents were watching them, they wouldn’t have got up to half of what they did, and they would have kept their rooms tidy too!

But it obviously ignores the fact that the folks are going to see the debauchery on the box anyway….
