In meetings, ask for objections when seeking approval

Published: 2026-10-24

When in a meeting with multiple people and you want to proceed with something, don’t ask “Is everyone ok with that?”.

Rarely do you get more than the odd groan. If there is silence someone will eventually break and say “Yeah sure..”.

It’s hardly a resounding approval to progress.

So instead ask if anyone has any objections. That way as silence is the norm, people have their chance to object, you can progress without the awkwardness and you have their approval.

“Silence is compliance” as our old Product Owner use to say.
